Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is a financial inclusion program launched by the Government of India on 28th August 2014. The scheme aims to provide access to financial services, such as banking facilities, insurance, and pensions, to the unbanked population in India.

The main objectives of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana are as follows:

  1. Universal access to banking facilities: The scheme aims to ensure that every household in India has access to a bank account. This helps in promoting financial inclusion and brings the unbanked population into the formal banking system.
  2. Financial literacy: The program also focuses on providing financial literacy and awareness to the account holders, especially those from marginalized and economically weaker sections of society. This helps them understand various financial products and services and make informed decisions.
  3. Access to credit: PMJDY aims to provide easy access to credit facilities for the account holders. It encourages banks to provide overdraft facilities and credit options to individuals, thereby promoting entrepreneurship and income generation.
  4. Direct benefit transfer: The scheme supports the government’s initiative of transferring various subsidies and benefits directly to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts. This reduces leakages and ensures efficient delivery of welfare schemes.
  5. Insurance and pension coverage: PMJDY also provides access to affordable insurance and pension schemes for the account holders. This helps in promoting social security and financial stability among the economically vulnerable sections of society.
